Dr. Joshua Gleis is Founder and President of Gleis Security Consulting, LLC. He has served as a consultant to religious institutions, schools, camps, community centers, government agencies, startups and real estate/property management firms. Joshua uses his unique background and expertise as a threat analyst to better protect institutions. He has trained thousands on issues as varied as situational awareness, intelligence, counterterrorism, Middle Eastern affairs, emergency response, and operational procedures. These trainings have included numerous DHS grant-funded programs.
Joshua has held positions at Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Columbia University’s Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, and the NYPD’s Counter-Terrorism Bureau. He previously held the role of Vice President of Operations for the largest non-profit security group (2000+ members) in the country, overseeing security for dozens of organizations, acting as team lead for security agents, and working with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. He has also previously served as Director of Strategic Planning for the Council for World Jewry – American Jewish Congress.
Joshua is author of the books Withdrawing Under Fire: Lessons Learned from Islamist Insurgencies (Potomac Books, Inc., April 2011), Hezbollah & Hamas: A Comparative Study (Johns Hopkins University Press, Fall 2012), and The Hibernating Bears: A Story about Lock Downs for Children (Troy Book Makers, March 2020). He has advised government agencies on issues of public diplomacy, counter-terrorism, and counter-insurgencies, and provided numerous lectures to law enforcement, clergy, students and the general public. He has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, and his op-eds and interviews have appeared in publications such as the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Boston Globe, Huffington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Forbes, Jerusalem Post, and Al Ahram.
Joshua received his PhD and Masters in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University – the nation’s oldest school of international affairs. He also has a Bachelor of Arts in Near Eastern Studies from Cornell University.
